I've been confused by the .gif thing as well. Initiatlly I assumed any in tumblr's list was okay, and maybe that’s still the case? Do they mean using a .gif from somewhere else? So yeah, also curious about the etiquette.

I'm sorry someone was rude about it, though. One of my least favorite things about ths internet is the tendency to *not* give people the benefit of the doubt.
